Workaround for Tabwin43 on Windows 10

I am posting this in a new message thread rather than responding to the existing thread about problems running Tabwin43 (aka TabRite) under Windows to make this workaround more visible to those who need it. That thread is here for those who want to see it: http://www.banjohangout.org/topic/318108

First the problem. I found that, after installing Tabwin43 on a new laptop running Windows 10, it would not start up correctly. This error message came up: "Can't show a non-modal form when a modal form is displayed".  The program runs fine on my desktop which I upgraded from Windows 7 to 10, however. I tried several compatibility modes without success.

The basic solution: Open an existing Tabwin43 file (.BJO extension). Tabwin will run in that case. Here's what I did.

  1. I copied a .BJO tab ("Booth Shot Lincoln") to my laptop and doubled-click to open it.
  2. Windows asked me to identify the program to use. I browsed to the Tabwin43 directory in the \Programs (x86)\ directory and selected the Tabwin.exe.
  3. The program opened the tab, allowed me to edit it, generated a Midi file, etc. I was also able to start a new tab with the File - New command.

I realize that most people use TablEdit, a powerful and popular program. I have written hundreds of tabs with Tabwin43 and can work very quickly with it, so it is a relief to now have this program working on my new laptop.
