How Is This TAB Marking Played?

Hello wonderful folk of BanjoHangout!

I am back with another question.
I am trying to learn a TAB for Béla Fleck's "Sunset Road" (found here in the TAB library,)
And encountered these markings in aforementioned TAB, (See Photos.)

I happened to have piano experience, from lessons when I was younger,
(Managed to forget everything I was taught somehow,)
But I Remember something like this being a "grace note" and even if I'm correct, what would be the best way to play such an embellishment on the banjo.
It is also not marked as a hammer on / pull of maybe that's just what they are as it look just like them. but some don't make sense as such, (see 2nd bar Ref no. 2.)

And if not, then what is it?
