Help with Mike Iverson's clawhammer arrangement of "Gentle on my Mind"

I am learning clawhammer style banjo and am building my repertoire of old time songs. My brother in law plays guitar and asked me to learn Gentle on my Mind to accompany him. I've been looking around for a good clawhammer arrangement.

There have been a lot of great discussions of this song on this forum over the years which I really enjoyed reading through. While searching around I came across this version from Mike Iverson that blew me away:

It is both simple and amazing. I am trying to figure out what he is doing to get the distinctive rhythm, if it is a simple back and forth clawhammer pattern or if he is sneaking some up-picks in there. Been listening to it over and over trying to replicate it on my banjo with no luck.
