Easy 5 String Banjo Songs for a Beginner

$

Hi gang once again, Rich Freeze here. I haven't got to play much the last year, because I been trying to work through a bad bout of Arthritis on  my back.  My banjo teacher is Chris  Ivanovich from Milwaukee Wi, We use to get together once a month, but with my Arthritis we haven't got together for over a year now. I been doing some exercises that seem to help, but I'm really rusty, Can anyone please suggest some beginner banjo songs and cord changes that might help, in Tadledit form, I use tabledit because I'm visually handicapped and I can make the tab bigger to read. Thank you so much veryone for your help.

Hi y'all!

I have looked everywhere for some tab for 'Polly Put The Kettle On' by Obray Ramsey from the Blue Ridge Banjo album, it's just such a beautiful, beguiling little piece and I'd be most grateful if anyone could offer any help or knows where to find it :)

I have been playing the 5 string banjo for nearly 10 months (Scruggs style...at least I am trying hard). I bought "Earl Scruggs and the 5 string banjo" in which there are many tabs of very interesting tunes. However I heard "Fireball Mail" and love the tune. Is there a tab of that tune available on the net ? Thanks. Gilles.

doug dillard clinch mtn backstep

Just noticed an old archived topic about Doug's Clinch Mtn Backstep. I must say it is the 2nd most enjoyable piece of banjo music I have ever heard, second only to Earl's Sally Goodin on the Live at Kansas State album.

On the old archived post folks were wondering how Doug played this. I have been listening and playing this tune since 1975 and first i must say that the guitar should accompany with no capo in the key of A. In both parts when you expect an  E chord it actually goes to a C, hence the reason for the guitar being uncappoed. It also goes to the 4 and 5 chords toward the end of each part (D and E).

Doug definitely has a different way of playing it than Dr. Ralph; the difference in sound is not just in his right hand attack. The power "snap" you hear in first part is, in my opinion, a pull-off on the third string from the 5th to third fret that is extremely accented.

In the 2nd part he does not do a forward/backward roll at the 2nd string 1st fret/3rd sting 3rd fret position. He is doing a a forward roll (5-3-1) freting the third string at the 5th fret and then the 3rd string 3rd fret. The second string is not involved. Then he again does the power "snap" toward the end of the second part like he did in the first part.

Does anyone else hear this as I? Would like to hear other ideas to try to duplicate Doug's sound.

Hope this helps those who were wondering about this.

I am trying to find a scruggs-style tab for "Alright in the Country" from Royalty Free Music Crew.  I am a novice and not able to figure it out myself, but I wonder if any of you have it or would be kind enough to "tab it up" for me?  It is not complicated.  I really want to learn it.  Can you help?  Thanks in advance for your help!

Apple Jack

Hello,

This is my first post, and I know that this request has been posted before, but I've only found half of the 'answer' I'm looking for! I'd really like to play the solo and the riffs that she plays in the song (Apple Jack), but since I'm just starting out on the five-string, I don't really know where to start. I know she goes between C and F in the verses and solo, but I'd really like to see a tab for it. It would be so much appreciated if someone could help out with the picking -- from what I've read, I think she plays it in Clawhammer style?

Anyways, here's the video:

Thanks in advance and I'm excited to learn some more things from here!

Farmers' Blues / Blue Highway

This break by Blue Highway's Jason Burleson has some of the best syncopated drive I have ever heard. The chords change in odd places so listen to the tune. I always thought that If Ralph Stanley had gone beyond his more simplistic style , he would have played like Jason Burleson.

There is also a tabledit version on the archive put there by Schlange. I didnt know that till i posted this.

It's in the key of A, capo 2nd fret

Hey there everyone, I was listening to some dave hum on YouTube today (a great inspiration for me) and I came upon apples and sloes. I was wondering if anyone knows where I can get a tab of this, I'm not that advanced yet as a player, especially my ear for music and tunings and whatnot. Even to know what tuning he used would be great. I can't find any tabs for this tune anywhere. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Was watching an old episode of Andy Griffin and enjoyed listening to "The Darling" Family Play Bluegrass, Never knew they were actually a very successful Blue Grass band named The Dillards.  Anyway, I really Like the song called "Don't Wait For The Hearse To Take You To Church"  Great  Lyrics and catchy tune.  Love to learn how to play it, so does anyone have a link to where I might find Tabs for this song? I Know it's a long shot but it's a Great Tune, you should give a listen if you never heard it. The Lyrics made me think of Roger Miller... Very Clever.
